Brothers Lucas and Noah, ages 10 and 12, have been listening to spooky stories at the after-school center all afternoon. Urban legends. One of them was about a Japanese ghost that hides its face and hunts down the living with a pair of scissors. Good thing ghosts don’t really exist. Or do they?

10-year-olds Gemma and Frida are being looked after by 15-year-old Maya, who tells them spooky stories. The girls are thrilled and want more scares, so Maya teaches them a new game. Light a candle, stand in front of a mirror, and call her name three times, and she will appear. Bloody Mary! It’s fun. And a bit scary. Good thing it’s just game and that Bloody Mary isn’t real. Or is she?

15-year-old Anton and little sister Ida move into a large, old house with their parents, but they think it’s much too isolated from the rest of civilization. However, their new backyard does border on a forest, which Anton thinks is pretty cool. Right until he starts hearing stories about The Bunny Man.

Harry and his mom have just packed up all their belongings in a rush and moved to a new house in a small town far away from his dad. Mom is super stressed out and doesn’t really have time to deal with Harry, so he decides to go outside and look for new friends. But there’s something strange about this town. The streets are totally desolate. Until the children with the black eyes show up.

Fifth grader Clara is the new girl at her school. She wants to make new friends, but she’s a bit shy, so she’s grateful when a girl invites her and two other girls to her house after school. There’s just one thing they want to show her on the way: The old farm where The Pig Lady used to live. That is, before she started decapitating people.

STRESS HAS BECOME A FACT OF LIFE for far too many people today. Until now, the treatment of stress has mostly focused on behavioral changes, combined with talking about and noticing every thought, feeling, and sensation. But according to the metacognitive approach, this excessive focus on the self is what actually creates the problem. Worrying and ruminating are not simply a symptom of stress, but the causes of stress, preventing stress sufferers from fostering real change.

We cannot get better by ruminating and worrying. Nevertheless, these are the strategies for many who suffer from anxiety and depression. But a wound does not heal by continuing to scratch at it. It just becomes bigger and bigger. If we spend several hours each day wondering about our gloomy thoughts, we become even more depressed and anxious, and do not thrive well psychologically.
