“I just wanted to experience it for myself.” Michael Crease is just a guy who fell through a hedge one night, when he was drunk. A hedge, on the other side of which was a house which appeared to have been unoccupied for decades. But it wasn’t. And that wasn’t his last fall.

The end of the world came suddenly and without warning, ruining an otherwise pleasant day off for billions of people. An incomprehensible, voracious evil has invaded the aisles of Duke’s Flea Market, spelling doom for the whole of humanity. But as luck would have it, not even the apocalypse can go off without a hitch.

Six months ago, Peter Rutherford ended a war which had lasted 20,000 years. Having done that, it seems that anything else would be mundane by comparison - even having inherited the innocent subjects of a world of torment and horror. Mundanity is what he craves, but he hasn't counted on the presence of beings who might hold him accountable for his actions: the first Law of Magic governs actions so massive that transgressions are impossible to hide.

When Peter Rutherford, a young man with nothing to live for, is almost killed in the crossfire of a magical duel, he awakes in the bowels of an ancient Guild of Magicians, whose charge is to defend the border between our world and another, protecting the rest of the world from a war which has been raging for over 20,000 years. Later, when he is invited to join them, is he supposed to be content with simply being a member of the team: a grunt, with a view to simply surviving and helping his peers to survive for one more generation?

Peter Rutherford had just wanted to go for a walk and get to sleep. Instead, he found himself dragged into a war which had been raging for millennia, in which all he could hope to do was maintain the status uqo. Until, that is, he conceived of a way to end the war, once and for all.

The constellation Maaren has vanished from the sky. Twelve great birds, the fabled Flight of Maar, are devouring the world. The only way to stop them is in the Forbidden City of the Yester. The journey is long and fraught with perils, with different countries being as completely different worlds. The Flight of Maar is their constant companion. But the Flight of Maar is not as it seems.
