The Marble Faun of 1860 was the last of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s four major romances. Set in Italy, the narrative blends elements of the travel guide, fable, and gothic novel. The main characters include Miriam, a beautiful painter with a mysterious past who is compared to Beatrice, Cleopatra and Eve, and Hilda, an innocent young woman with strong moral principles. The sculptor Kenyon has an eye for Hilda, whilst Donatello, the Count of Monte Beni, is besotted by Miriam. Donatello bears a resemblance to the statue type called the Faun of Praxiteles.

After a year of marriage, Eugene Irtenev's wife, Liza, employs two peasant women. One of them is Stepanida, with whom Eugene had a passionate relationship prior to meeting Liza. William Lyon Phelps (1865 - 1943) was an author, critic, and scholar. He had a radio show, wrote a daily syndicated newspaper column, lectured frequently, and published numerous popular books and articles. "Human Nature in the Bible" (1931) is an essay about the curiosities of human nature. Phelps looks at the Bible from another perspective than those based simply on dogma.
