Tara has returned to Thomas, but she is no longer the person he remembers. She has now spent twelve years in the eighteenth of November, while Thomas has endlessly repeated his identical day. He struggles to reconcile Tara as she is now with the Tara he loves. And so she rejoins her friends, with whom she finds companionship and understanding. They set off for Val Benoît, where other time-stranded people have created a community built on curiosity, conversation and even optimism.

Tara Selter has lived the eighteenth of November 1,143 times when she notices a break in the pattern; a man has changed his shirt. The man is Henry Dale and he remembers all the days that have come before. He knows that time has fallen out of joint. Now they are two of a kind: trapped in the eighteenth of November, but no longer alone. Together they learn to share their present; their voices grow hoarse recounting their small battles against it and their bewilderment at the disintegrating world.

Tara Selter is searching for a way back into time. A year has passed, but Tara still wakes up to the same newspapers, and the same blank faces when she explains that she has seen this all before. Until one morning, she boards a train and finds herself in a new day. It is still the eighteenth of November, but the faces are different, the weather is colder. She realises that she has found a way out of her endless autumn.

Tara Selter has slipped out of time. Every morning, she wakes up to the 18th of November. She no longer expects to wake up to the 19th of November, and she no longer remembers the 17th of November as if it were yesterday. She comes to know the shape of the day like the back of her hand—the grey morning light in her Paris hotel; the moment a blackbird breaks into song; her husband's surprise at seeing her return home unannounced. But for everyone around her, this day is lived for the first and only time.

Tara Selter, the heroine of On the Calculation of Volume, has involuntarily stepped off the train of time: in her world, November eighteenth repeats itself endlessly. We meet Tara on her 122nd November 18th: she no longer experiences the changes of days, weeks, months, or seasons. She finds herself in a lonely new reality without being able to explain why: how is it that she wakes every morning into the same day, knowing to the exact second when the blackbird will burst into song and when the rain will begin?

Dans ce deuxième tome, Tara Selter décide de quitter sa maison. Elle se met en tête de passer une soirée de Noël en famille, le même 18 novembre. Après de nombreux voyages, Tara s’installe en Allemagne où elle suit des cours de civilisation romaine. Mais un jour, elle fait une étrange rencontre. Un homme, sans doute déjà croisé quelque part. Un homme avec qui elle découvre qu’elle partage bien plus qu’elle ne pouvait l’imaginer.

La sonnerie du portail de la maison de Brême résonne, et bientôt, Tara, Henry, Olga et Ralf se retrouvent face à cinq individus, de l’autre côté de la grille. D’autres viendront. Ils le savent, il s’agit maintenant de s’organiser. Une vraie communauté du 18 novembre se créée avec ses codes, ses habitudes, ses règles. Ses interrogations aussi – alors que les mots qu’ils connaissent ne sont plus suffisamment précis, ne parviennent plus à nommer le monde dans lequel ils vivent, que l’effet du temps commence à se faire sentir sur les corps, les visages.

La série événement traduite dans le monde entier. Pour Tara Selter, le temps s’est arrêté un 18 novembre. Dans ce troisième tome, elle découvre qu’elle n’est plus seule. Henry, un sociologue norvégien, participe à une conférence à Düsseldorf lorsqu’il se retrouve, lui aussi, enfermé dans cette boucle temporelle. À rebours de la réaction de Tara, Henry ressent d’abord une forme de soulagement et aborde l’existence d’une nouvelle façon, dénuée de toute notion d’utilité ou de bénéfice.
