About this listen

DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she's seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She's gotten tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. Too tough. And now she's been given one final warning: make it work with her new sergeant, DS Joseph Easter, or she's out.

Her partner, DS Joseph Easter, is the handsome, squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname, Holy Joe, belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

Their adversary is a ruthless man who holds DI Galena responsible for his terrible disfigurement.

As with all Ellis 's books, this was a fantastic story, well written with sympathetic characters and good plot twists. My difficulty was only with the narrator, whose at times shrill female voices, dodgy regional accents and mispronounced words was a little distracting.

Brilliant story, let down by narrator

I enjoyed the story as I like Joy Ellis’ books but the narration spoiled it. The accents are awful. Not sure I will be able to finish it as I can’t bear listening to the dreadful accents. I won’t be moving on to the other items in the series because they all have the same narrator.

Terrible narration and accents, put me off

I always enjoy Joy Ellis’s books. This is the first I have listened to instead of reading myself. Unfortunately the narrator was not very good. I live in the fens and found the accents very jarring. I would not listen to another book narrated by this person.

Good story, shame about the narrator

The story is great and really gripping, I found myself looking forward to my next car journey so I could listen again!! However, the narrator is pretty bad! The accents were confused, I'm pretty sure they weren't Lincolnshire, more generic northern. It's a shame Nikki had to sound so confrontational all the time. A couple of points which really irritated me:
WPC is no longer used, both genders are referred to as PC and learn how to pronounce SOCO correctly!!!

Great story once you get over the awful narration!

The story isn't too bad but the narration totally spoils it with the awful voices she uses for the different characters. I stuck to out to see what the ending would be but it wasn't an enjoyable experience.

Dreadful narration
