Paul Mason is an award-winning author, journalist and political strategist. Born in 1960, in Leigh, Lancashire, he moved from a career in business journalism at Reed Elsevier to become economics editor at BBC Newsnight and Channel 4 News. He has been named by the Guardian as one of Britain's top public intellectuals. As a TV journalist he covered the 2008 global financial crisis, the 2014 war in Gaza and the fiscal crisis in Greece. He is the author of eight books, including the bestseller Postcapitalism: A Guide to Our Future and the novel Rare Earth, together with three stage plays, including Why It's Kicking Off Everywhere, televised by BBC TWO in 2017. Since going freelance in 2016 he has combined writing with political research, strategy and activism. For his writing on anti-fascism and in defence of humanism he was in 2020 awarded the prestigious Erich Fromm Prize. A 'radical social democrat' aligned to Britain's Labour Party - he is passionately committed to social justice, the defence of democratic values and the promotion of universal human rights. His latest book - Reds: A Global History of Communism - is published in August 2026 in the UK, and October 2026 in the USA.
