I was born in Coventry, where I learned early on that life's best stories rarely happen in quiet places. They happen in pubs, sports clubs, workplaces and around people who don't realise they're being funny. Much of my writing is inspired by the remarkable characters I've met over the years. Cricket clubs, rugby clubs, village pubs and countless conversations over a pint have provided an endless supply of personalities, banter and larger-than-life moments. I often joke that I've spent years conducting "research" in British pubs—but there's more truth in that than I'd probably admit. Before becoming a full-time author, I started at the very bottom of the banking industry and worked my way up into middle management, building a career with organisations including Barclays, Lloyds TSB, VISA Europe, National Australia Bank and Bank of Cyprus. Along the way I met thousands of people from every walk of life. Some were brilliant. Some were baffling. Many were unforgettable. More than a few eventually wandered into my novels—although I usually change the names to protect the guilty. Those experiences shaped the way I write. I love ordinary people with extraordinary personalities, the sort of characters you only seem to find in British pubs, sports clubs and workplaces. Their stories, friendships, rivalries and relentless banter form the heart of everything I write. My novels blend British comedy, pub humour, dark comedy, comic horror, supernatural fiction, ghost stories and paranormal mystery with eccentric characters and everyday life. I enjoy taking familiar places—a local pub, a village, a group of lifelong friends—and asking one simple question: "What if something completely impossible happened... and everyone carried on as though it was only mildly inconvenient?" That idea became The Hungry Table, where a haunted pub, impossible beer mats, disappearing pork scratchings and an ancient evil collide with the wonderfully stubborn logic of British pub regulars. If my books make you laugh, remind you of someone you've met, or leave you looking suspiciously at the table in the corner of your local, then I've done exactly what I set out to do. After all, the best fiction usually begins with someone you once met over a pint.
