Martha Sweezy grew up in Cambridge, MA, with two older siblings, various dogs, and many musicians, artists, and professors coming and going from her house. She is currently an assistant professor, part-time, in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and a clinical and research consultant at the Cambridge Health Alliance Center for Mindfulness & Compassion. Before opening a private practice, she worked on staff in community mental health at the Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) for 18 years seeing patients, helping Matt Leeds run a DBT program, supervising, teaching, and learning. In 2004, CHA colleague Nancy Sowell introduced her to Richard Schwartz and Internal Family Systems therapy, which was a revelation. She spent the next few years completing the three levels of IFS training, introducing the IFS model to staff at CHA with colleagues, and writing articles about IFS. She then began to co-edit and co-author books on various applications of IFS and teach IFS nationally and internationally. In 2011 she joined four colleagues in a working group that aimed to promote research on IFS. In 2020, after the pandemic took off, she sat down to write a book she had been thinking about for several years on how to spot, understand, and treat shame and guilt from an IFS perspective. In addition to seeing clients, she continues to write, teach and consult on IFS research. She also has a podcast with co-hosts Hanna Soumerai Rae and Fiona Kate Rice called System Updates: IFS Chitchat and a blog on IFS-related topics in Psychology Today.
