Julian E. Benoit came to writing the long way around, through two decades of military service that shaped how he sees people, conflict, and its cost. A lifelong fan of science fiction and fantasy, he was more likely to be found devouring novels than completing English assignments, eventually earning a degree in biology before spending nearly a decade in the construction industry. At thirty, he enlisted in the United States Army, beginning a 21-year career in operations, logistics, and maintenance leadership. His military experience, leading teams in high-risk, high-tempo environments, managing complex systems under pressure, and operating in places far removed from comfort, now informs every aspect of his storytelling. While he doesn’t write traditional military fiction, his work reflects the realities he lived: the weight of leadership, the unpredictability of missions, and the human dynamics inside tightly bound teams. His characters face consequences, and their victories are earned, not granted. Benoit first began writing a science fiction novel in college, revisiting it intermittently over the next twenty years, often reconstructing lost drafts from memory after misplaced notebooks and obsolete storage devices erased his progress. Eventually, he set that story aside, recognizing that his voice had evolved. That turning point led to the creation of Aertu, a richly imagined fantasy world shaped as much by discipline and adversity as by imagination. He hopes you enjoy reading his stories… and wonders why he’s in the third person.
