Hello dear readers, I'm so pleased to meet you here and introduce you to my writing life. My first job after university was at British Vogue - after entering their annual talent competition I was offered a job in the editorial side - it was a fantastic start to grown-up life and work and I had a ball! Then real life kicked in and as a young mother at home with toddlers I began my career as a biographer. To my amazement my books were well-reviewed and I had one Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller - my examination of the relationship between Elizabeth l and Mary Queen of Scots. I also had the honour of being elected a Fellow of The Royal Society of Literature, and signed my name into the roll call of Fellows using Lord Byron's own pen. Recently I have discovered the joy of writing historical fiction, specifically set in the Regency in the time of the Napoleonic Wars. My first novel, 'The Marriage Season', was published January 2023, the second, 'An Unsuitable Heiress', in May 2023, my third 'A Scandalous Match', January 2024, the 4th 'A Lady's Fortune', August 2024 and my fifth, 'The Accidental Debutante' June 2025. After recovering from a nearly fatal car accident I managed to finish my sixth, 'The Gentleman's Dilemma' to be published in October 2026. My love of this period dates back to my first biography, of Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, when I met the poets, Shelley and Byron and the young romantics navigating their way in a dynamic and fast changing world. It delights me that the characters and stories in 'The Marriage Season', and the subsequent novels, all standalone, but three of the books have interlinked characters, when old friends return to feature in the story of one of their number. My biographies are: 'Moon in Eclipse: A Life of Mary Shelley'; 'A Very Close Conspiracy: Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf'; 'Antonia White: A Life'. 'Elizabeth and Mary: Cousins, Rivals, Queens' spent seven weeks in the top ten of the Sunday Times bestseller list. This was followed by 'Read my Heart: Dorothy Osborne and Sir William Temple, a Love Story in the Age of Revolution' and then 'Daphne du Maurier and her Sisters'. I live in Berkshire with my husband, the Classicist, Nicholas Ostler, and our beloved pack of whippets, all now having chased off into the heavens. I am amazed and grateful if you've read this far and hope you enjoy any one of my books, all written from the heart. The most thanks go to my wonderful readers who have bought my books, some of you taking the time to leave such insightful and encouraging reviews. You make all this possible. Jane
