Eben Kirksey is professor of anthropology at the University of Oxford and an award winning author. He studies how plants, animals, and microbes shape the lives of people. He is the author of four books: Symbiotic: How Viruses Make Us Human (2027); The Mutant Project (2020); Emergent Ecologies (2015); and Freedom in Entangled Worlds (2012). Eben has an insatiable curiosity about nature and culture. Investigating some of the most important stories of our time—related to biotechnology, the environment, and social justice—led him to Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas. In academic settings, Eben is perhaps best known for his work on multispecies ethnography—a field that uses innovative approaches to study human interactions with animals, microbes, fungi, and plants. Two of his edited books have helped define the field: The Promise of Multispecies Justice (2022) and The Multispecies Salon (2014). Together with Stefan Helmreich he also published “The Emergence of Multispecies Ethnography.”
