in 1994, Dave had a psychotic break and he and his wife Heather lost everything. They were homeless with their family for eighteen months. Dave was unable to work or interact socially for fourteen years. He calls this time his lost years and dark days. In 2011, at the urging of Heather, Dave took a stand up comedy class for people with mental illness. The class changed his life. Looking for and finding the humor in his dark days of debilitating depression, overwhelming anxiety, panic attacks and mania gave Dave control over his mental health instead of his mental illness having control of him. Today, Dave teaches stand up comedy to other folks with mental illness and sees the same transformation happening with them. Dave's book, "Healing with Humor: Mental Illness to Mental Health One Laugh, One Joke, One Inspiring Story at a Time", tells his comedy story and that of five other folks who have taken his classes. Reading the book or listening to the audiobook you will find yourself rooting for Lorayne, cheering for Molly, and laughing at the jokes of all the "comics". Healing with Humor is a winner of the Next Generation Indie Book Awards. Over 2000 ebooks were downloaded in the first week on Amazon. The audiobook includes clips of the comics performing on stage. It has been described as brilliant. It is a great book and has great reviews. Dave's book, "OMG That's Me! Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, Panic Attacks and more...", is a bestseller on Amazon, a category winner of the Next Generation Indie Book Awards and has been named one of the best depression books of all time, one of the best anxiety books of all time, and one of the best panic attack books of all time by BookAuthority. What started out as a couple of blog posts blossomed into a following of over 1,000,000 people—who have all read and been touched by Dave’s stories. The most extraordinary thing he found when writing about his experiences is that the most common comment about his work is “OMG that’s me! You are telling my story. I don’t feel so alone now.” OMG That’s Me! is sometimes funny, often poignant, but always deeply honest, open, and personal. Dave's stories let other people with mental illness know they are not alone, that there is help and there is hope, and that they too can recover and live a full life. This book is a must read for family members and friends who for the first time understand will the experiences of loved ones living with a mental illness. This book is a must read for people who work in the mental health field who will better understand the symptoms faced by their patients. And ordinary people will see the strength, resilience, and beauty of people that will shatter the stigma surrounding mental illness. Today Dave lives a full life with Heather in Happy Valley, Oregon. He is a frequent podcast guest, an in demand speaker, and a nationally recognized mental health advocate. And he is currently working on a companion workbook for Healing with Humor.
