Darrin E. Knowles spent more than thirty years as a commercial property insurance general adjuster, a career that trained him to look carefully at evidence, documentation, and what happens when records disappear. He is a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®), a United States Navy veteran, and a member of the National Genealogical Society. For the past twenty years, Knowles has pursued genealogical research as a serious avocation, tracing family lines through archives, county records repositories, and federal record systems. That research led directly to The Erased Generation, which tells the story of the 1973 fire that destroyed 80% of America's military service records and what families can do to find what survived. His professional experience in the insurance industry is the foundation of Protecting Your Home: Insurance Essentials, a practical guide to understanding home insurance coverage before you need to file a claim. The President Who Got a Speeding Ticket grew from the same curiosity that drives his research — a conviction that the real version of history, with all the strange details left in, is more interesting than the simplified version most people learned in school. Knowles lives in Florida with his wife. When he is not writing or researching, he can usually be found on the water, in his workshop, or spending time with his children and five grandchildren.
