Hello! I’m Clay Boone, author of Where Shadows Are the Darkest. Growing up in rural Missouri, my great-aunt would regale me with stories passed down from her grandparents about their lives during the Civil War and Reconstruction. It fascinated me that these memories had been carried forward through generations. Real experiences from people who lived through that turbulent time. Those stories made the history of the Ozarks feel personal to me, and I wanted that reflected in my writing. My work blends the visceral realities of the post-Civil War South with darker elements drawn from the folklore, fears, and religious beliefs of the time. It’s not just gunsmoke and glory. It’s the coppery taste of blood in your mouth, the smell of last night’s fires hanging in the air, and the burning in your lungs when you run for your life.
