Maria Kondratova (Мария Кондратова) was born in Ukraine, where she graduated from V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University and went on to earn a PhD in molecular biology. A computational biologist by training, she focuses her research on molecular oncology and immunology. She works as a data scientist in biomedical research, with previous experience at the Curie Institute in Paris, one of Europe's leading cancer research centers. A science communicator at heart, Maria is the author of several books including two popular science titles and fiction. She is a laureate of the Enlightener Prize — an independent award founded by Dmitry Zimin to support authors and readers, and to preserve rationality and a scientific worldview in the face of rising pseudoscience and anti-intellectualism. When she is not writing or working with data, Maria enjoys solitary walks on empty beaches, small crispy waffles, and good books. She appreciates people who can disagree without contempt.
