When a 100-year-old crucifix is discovered around the neck of a 500-year-old mummy, Brandon Walker once more calls on the expertise of India Summers to solve the mystery. Within days they realise there is far more to this than a cruel hoax, and it soon becomes clear that there are strong links back to the SS in the Second World War. Ultimately, what they find is not only a cover-up of global proportions and the tragic aftermath of a long-forgotten battle, but a group of dangerous men seeking the most powerful and dangerous Icon the world has ever known.

Isabel, born into the British Raj, and Asha, a young Hindu girl, both consider India their home. Through mischance and accident their stories intersect, and circumstances will bring them from the bustling city of Delhi to the shores of the Andaman Islands, from glittering colonial parties to the squalor and desperation of a notorious prison, and into the lives of men on opposing sides of the fight for self-rule. As the shadow of the Second World War falls across India, Isabel, caught up in growing political violence, has to make impossible choices.

When Brandon Walker receives a plea for help from an old adversary, he wastes no time in recruiting the extraordinary talents of India Summers to unravel a trail of murder, tragedy and the possibility of untold wealth. They soon discover a letter from 500 years earlier, and the trail leads them to one of the missing treasures of the modern world, the Piris Reis map. India and Brandon attempt to uncover the secrets of the map, but as they travel the world they are closely watched at every step by a family of assassins with an agenda of their own.
