In June 1862, Dostoevsky left St. Petersburg on his first excursion to Western Europe. Ostensibly making the trip to consult Western specialists about his epilepsy, he also wished to see the source of the Western ideas he believed were corrupting Russia. Over the course of his journey he visited a number of major cities, including Berlin, Paris, London, Florence, Milan, and Vienna. His impressions on what he saw, Winter Notes on Summer Impressions, were first published in the February 1863 issue of "Vremya" (Time), the periodical he edited, and are collected here.

A Confession, or My Confession, is a short work on the subject of melancholia, philosophy and religion by the acclaimed Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy. It was written in 1879 to 1880, when Tolstoy was in his early fifties.

Der Autor erzählt die Leidensgeschichte des Studenten Rodion Raskolnikow, der zum Mörder wird und letztlich daran zerbricht. Die Suche nach Moral und Gerechtigkeit und der Umgang mit Schuld vor dem Hintergrund gesellschaftlicher Veränderungen sind die Themen, die von Dostojewski hier verarbeitet werden. Nicht zuletzt wird dabei ein klares Bild der sozialen Verhältnisse im St. Petersburg des 19. Jahrhunderts gezeichnet.

In Old Age by Anton Chekhov we have the theme of change, loss, renewal, memories, guilt and despair. Taken from his The Complete Stories collection the story is narrated in the third person by an unnamed narrator and very early on in the story the reader realises that Chekhov may be exploring the theme of change. Since Uzelkov has returned to his hometown he cannot imagine the differences the town has undertaken. It is not the place that he has left and there is a sense of modernity. Even the old waiter cannot remember the parts of the town that Uzelkov can.

Alexander Kuprin prefaced his novel The Pit about the lives of early 20th century Russian prostitutes as follows, "I know many people will find this novel amoral and inappropriate, but nevertheless I dedicated it from the bottom of my heart to mothers and young people" Indeed, the novel's publication was followed by an explosion of outrage. The "good" society accused Kuprin of slander and forever exiled him from its sitting rooms, charity auctions, and holiday balls. Progressive intellecutals winced and shuddered, but could not help admitting Kuprin had a point.

Premier des romanciers modernes, Fiodor Dostoïevski est parmi les plus grands écrivains russes du XIXe siècle. Dans "Les carnets du sous-sol", il fait le récit d'un homme reclus qui depuis son sous-sol observe le monde en contre-plongée. Le narrateur crache ses mots avec aigreur, son refus obstiné du bonheur, déverse ses angoisses et sa haine envers l'humanité. Écrit en 1864, on y retrouve un condensé de la fureur barbare qui fait l'œuvre de l'auteur et les bases des grands romans à venir.
