A poetry workshop to celebrate Black History Month at Kingston University led to the formation of Kindred Spirits, a poetry group comprised of students from multiple faculties, all with one thing in common: the need to express themselves through the written word. Manuel Machado, one of the Machado brothers, was a poet of the so called "Generation of 98". He wrote poetry in the "Andalusian style" and dramatic works, some in collaboration with his brother Antonio Machado. Manuel Machado's poetry is different to his more famous brother but it has the same quality and class. Indeed, to really understand and enjoy the two brothers poetry its necessary to have read both of them. The contrast in between their poetry makes their individuality even more attractive. The Shield of Heracles is an archaic Greek epic poem that was attributed to Hesiod during antiquity. The subject of the poem is the expedition of Heracles and Iolaus against Cycnus, the son of Ares, who challenged Heracles to combat as Heracles was passing through Thessaly.
