Summary

 In the autumn of 2019, a hand-painted wooden sign appeared overnight in the window of the Moosejaw General Store, offering a free gift to anyone who asked for it by name. I was twenty-two, working the late shift, and I thought it was a prank from the high school kids. But the sign was nailed from the inside. And the gift was a small pine box, sealed with wax, that smelled like wet earth and something else—something that made my teeth ache. When I opened it, I found a lock of hair tied with red thread, and a note that read: 'You were always meant to have this. The rest will follow.' The store closed six days later, and I still see the sign when I drive past, even though the building burned down in February.
