Summary

 October of 2019, outside the town of Jasper, Kentucky. Luna hears about a small church called Dustfall Hollow that meets in a converted barn at the end of a gravel road. The congregation is small, maybe twenty people, led by a woman named Ruth. They don't have a pastor. They pass around a notebook instead. Ruth says everyone writes down what they want God to hear, and then they read them aloud. Luna goes one Sunday night out of curiosity. The service is quiet, almost peaceful. But the last entry in the notebook is not from anyone in the room. It is addressed to someone by name, and it describes something only Luna has ever seen—something she has never told another person. She does not read it aloud. She closes the notebook and hands it to the next person. The hymn that follows is not in the hymnal. No one seems to notice. Luna does not sleep that night. She does not go back. But she still hears that melody sometimes, especially in October, especially near dusk.
