FIFA, soccer's global governing body, has been mired in allegations of systemic corruption for decades, reaching a breaking point with a dramatic 2015 FBI raid in Zurich. These investigations, led by agents Michael Guya and Jared Randall, treated FIFA like an organized crime syndicate, utilizing the RICO Act to target high-ranking officials. The most controversial moment in FIFA's history occurred in 2010 when the organization awarded the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. Qatar’s bid was deemed "high risk" by FIFA’s own evaluation team due to sweltering summer temperatures and a total lack of infrastructure. Critics and analysts argued the Gulf State "bought" the tournament through a massive lobbying effort involving untraceable private funds. Evidence later emerged that Qatari official Mohammed bin Hammam orchestrated roughly $5 million in bribes to international delegates. UEFA suggested that FIFA succumbed to political pressure from Donald Trump to lift the suspension, further damaging the competition’s credibility. These ongoing issues suggest that despite internal reforms, the influence of money and politics remains deeply embedded in global soccer’s leadership.
