Summary

In the summer of 1998, on a back road outside of Shiloh, Arkansas, I saw a woman playing a cello at the edge of a field at midnight. No car. No house nearby. Just her, the instrument, and the highway. The next night she was gone, but the music stayed. A slow, deep note that vibrated through the windshield and into my chest. I didn't stop. I wish I had. This is a story about the sound you can't forget, the one that follows you home and waits, patient, somewhere in the dark corners of your house. It's about Mercy Line Road, and the woman who played for no one. Or maybe for someone who was listening from the other side.
