About this listen
Lynne's second appearance on the podcast is focused on the life of Charles Symmes, the owner of the Symmes Inn, which is now a local museum.
Charles Symmes was a nephew of Philemon Wright Sr (episode 1). He came to Canada in 1819 to work as a bookkeeper for his uncle. In 1831, he built what is now the famous Symmes Inn on the river bank and went into business with several other business men in the area. Over the years, the waterfront was developed with a huge wharf and Symmes went into a partnership building a steam boat named Lady Colborne. He was also the Mayor of Aylmer, Quebec from 1855 to 1858 and again from 1860 to 1862.
