Emma Locklear, a community college student who gets by on her mother's trust fund, finds herself falling short in her landscaping class. To earn class credit, she begrudgingly starts working for the Rileys, the wealthiest couple in Nothern California.
Unexpected, welcome perks come with the job when Mrs. Riley takes Emma under her wing. However, the unexplained gloominess of the estate intensifies when she uncovers her family’s cursed World War II relic in the Riley mansion. The discovery leads Emma to question her employer’s generosity, leading her down a twisted path.

This was a good first book, there were plenty of positives about it, just needed a bit more polishing to get to a higher rating. The characters and setting were well drawn and the plot was an interesting one.
It did feel more older YA/NA given the way the main character, Emma, came across as quite naive & immature in how her internal dialogue was presented (e.g. I wonder if..., Did I just hear, etc to something glaringly obvious) and the style of writing.
Going back to the plot, I enjoyed the slowburn, unravelling of what was going on and how it was linked to Emma's new job with Mrs Riley. The use of the alternative points of view (Mr & Mrs Riley) in the final few chapters were a nice touch and an interesting way of revealing more of the story.
The narrator did a good job of bringing Emma to life, she was easy to listen to and had a good emotional range.
I only really had two issues with the book:
1. Creamer in tea instead of milk (as a Northern Irish person I am horrified by this idea on behalf of both the UK & Ireland)
2. When Emma returned to her apartment after spending the night at Mrs Riley's and was concerned about a tracking device she changed all of her clothes apart from her knickers (eww!)

This was a good, easy listen for me inbetween more intense reads/listens and I'd definitely try the author's next book to see how their writing has progressed.

Holy hell! The twists and turns in this story were just insane. I genuinely did not see THAT ending coming.
I definitely recommend grabbing this one!

I was sitting on the edge of my seat from the start. Emma is a character with many layers, innocent and one that has a stalker. The who and why will have questioning and trying to solve the mystery.
Is Emma what she seems and having you doubt yourself . The twists and turns will have shaking your head and lets not mention the cliffhanger.
