Summary

Your daughter falls in love with your best friend's husband. Whose side are you on?

As I walk through the front door of my daughter Scarlett's house, looking forward to the birthday lunch we have planned, nothing can prepare me what I see. Andrew is here too, my best friend's husband ... Scarlett and Andrew say they are in love. Despite the 25-year age gap, they want to be together.

My best friend Philippa and I have known each other for 50 years. Our daughters are more like sisters. We know everything about each other. And Philippa's the only person in the world who knows my darkest secret.

She'd decided to leave Andrew. They'd drifted apart. My husband and I were devastated – her desire for a different kind of life broke up our happy little group – but I supported her.

Now, seeing Andrew and Scarlett together ... I can't take it in.

My husband is horrified, and my loyalties are all over the place. Scarlett begs me to keep her secret from Philippa. Begs me to understand that, despite the age gap and the way in which they came together, she and Andrew are perfect for each other.

I cannot lose my daughter over this but how can I betray my best friend? How can I risk her sharing the secret that could break apart my own family?

And what would happen if my family found out who I really am?

This is one of the best books I've read so far this year (2025), and since it’s my 97th book, I do feel qualified to say so.

Families—we've all got them, and with them comes drama. Perhaps not as much as in this book, but still, there is drama. Chances are, you know somebody who’s fallen out with a sibling or cousin and hasn’t spoken to them in years. So, what would you do if your daughter started dating your best friend’s ex-husband, whom she'd been with for years? Would you tell her, or stay quiet and hope it blows over?

Friendships can be tested, and no one knows this better than Jackie. When her lifelong friend, Phillipa, confesses that she no longer loves her husband, Andrew, and the idea of growing old together brings her out in hives, things start to unravel.

Jackie worries that Andrew, now living alone, will struggle to cope. Knowing Scarlett’s love for running, she suggests that Scarlett invite Andrew to her running club. That decision sets off a chain of events that tears two families apart.

Their daughters, Abigail and Scarlett, who are as close as sisters, are pulled into the drama when Abigail’s boyfriend Guy proposes, and Scarlett is named chief bridesmaid. With Jackie booked to make the Wedding Cake, will they still be welcome to the wedding?

I couldn’t listen to this book fast enough—relatable characters, a gripping story, and Emma Spurgin Hussey’s top-notch narration make this a perfect holiday read.

The writing was very clever and witty. The plot was quite a dilemma - how to chiose between your daughter (aged 30) and your best friend of 50+ years. I kept wondering how ut would all pan out, right until the very end.

Excellent story and clever writing

I loved everything about this. Great story with a lot of twists and turns to keep it interesting. Great characters and some challenging scenarios that were shown from all sides to show that life is not black and white. Really enjoyable.
