Danger and violence have always been part of Sue Dalston's East End upbringing. Unloved by her mother, abused by her father, and brutalised throughout her entire marriage, she smashed her husband's skull in a final act of desperation. All that keeps her sane knows that she's done it to protect her four children. At last, they are safe from harm. When she is celled up with murderess Matilda Enderby, their fates become inextricably linked. And no one - least of all Sue - could have predicted the consequences...

How two lives from complete opposite lifestyles meet is fascinating. The book helps to gain an understanding of why some women tolerate abuse for so long. An excellent read into the psyche of abuse and the triumph of justice.

Fascinating

I felt that the discription of this book doesn't really discribe much about the true storyline of this book. But that said , I really enjoyed this book (if enjoy is the right word you can use about a book describing the abominable treatment of women !!!!) , this is Martina Cole when she's on form !!!

A different narrator to the other MC books , but Jacquelie King did a really good job.

I'm so glad audible have obtained more of Martina Coles older books , there have been a lot of them I've missed out on , I look forward to listening to them

I don't understand why Jacqueline King has not been the voice on many more Martina Cole books. She is an unbelievably fantastic reader.

I’d given up on this book owing to the non-stop catalogue of violence and foul-mouthed quarrelling. Sympathetic characters are few and far between in this story with a background of turf wars among the underclass of crime families in London. It may be realistic but it makes for a grim listen. I saw that many loved this book and that I may have given up too soon, but after three hours of the above I couldn’t stand any more of it. After a break I reread the reviews and had another go. It does become more interesting but I still think it’s mainly a very unpleasant listen that piles on the horror and violence unremittingly. I know that many women suffer as depicted by the characters in this book and maybe it’s a good thing to remind those of us who have never experienced domestic violence just how awful it can be and difficult to escape. After all the gritty realism and characters verging on monstrous caricatures the epilogue seems a sop to sentimentality.

The narrator is exceptionally good

Mostly a grim story of abuse and violence
