About this listen

From the bestselling author of Sabre Security and Briar Valley comes a dark, found family why choose romance featuring a self-destructive heroine and the tortured men determined to save her from herself.

WELCOME TO BLACKWOOD INSTITUTE.

WHERE BAD GIRLS COME TO DIE.

Murderer. Unhinged. Remorseless. Insane.

I’ve been called it all while rotting away in a maximum security psych ward, imprisoned for my crimes. When I’m given a chance to escape this hell, it’s an offer I can’t refuse.

I’m transferred to Blackwood Institute, purgatory for the dangerous and disturbed. The deal is simple. Complete the three-year experimental program and you’re free to leave.

I have no such intentions. People like me; we’re born to die. There’s no life for me out there. I’ll do whatever it takes to end my pitiful existence.

This time, nobody can stop me. Not even the four fellow patients with dark secrets and damage that rivals my own.

A tight lipped cutter.

A manic nymphomaniac.

A possessive control freak.

A shadowy ghost from my past.

The clock is ticking. If I’m not careful, the demons that frequent these blood-stained halls will get to me before I can take my own life.

Game on.

Author's Note: Twisted Heathens is a dark, contemporary reverse harem romance set in an experimental mental health institution. This is book one in the trilogy and it does end on a cliffhanger. Set in the J Rose shared universe.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶🌶2.5

Twisted Heathens is not your typical romance. It dives deep into mental illness, trauma, and survival, following Brooklyn, a broken yet fierce woman who's admitted to a mental institution with one goal: end her life before the past catches up to her.

What she doesn’t expect? The four guys she meets inside...each of them just as damaged, dangerous, and complex. Their connection is messy, raw, and impossible to ignore.

Every character is layered and real...especially Eli (protect him at all costs 🥺) . The mental health rep is heavy and honest, so definitely check the trigger warnings first.

If you're into dark reverse harem with emotional depth, mystery, and morally gray characters that’ll wreck you..in the best way...this one's for you.

Twisted Heathens is not a light read...it’s brutal, beautiful, and at times deeply uncomfortable. But for those who crave stories about broken people finding pieces of solace in one another, it’s utterly captivating. Just be warned, the content is heavy. That said, if you’re ready to walk through the fire, Brooklyn and her twisted heathens will be waiting for you in the flames.

🎧For the Narration. This is a dual Narration, and i think both of the narrators did an excellent job. I'm very picky when it comes to British accents ( it's hard to enjoy what your brought up around in my opinion) but I think it was done well and each character had their own very easily identified personality.

Dark, intense, and completely addictive.

I loved this book, it does deal with mental health and some extreme cases with some elements that can be triggering, so please read the warnings first.
The whole story had me completely hooked, the main characters are just so believable, Eli just breaks my heart 🥺 the demons of his past are just unimaginable, heartbreaking.
Brooke the FMC has so much going on, her mental illness, the guilt that she carries and 4 young men trying to hold her and themselves together. I can't wait to start the second book in the series, which I'm about to start after finishing this review. One of the best books I've read in awhile ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Phenomenal !!!

This is an audiobook review.
I honestly don't know what to make of this story,I have never read a book before that had taken place in a mental Institution(The Blackwood Institute)...
Plus the story also has triggers for me..So why the hell did I even try to listen to this book?...
Well I honestly don't know why I think I was just so intrigued by the blurb I wanted to test my resolve.
I surprised myself because I actually really liked it,found myself enjoying it,falling in love with the flawed characters, and anticipating for book 2.
There is more than one main character there are 5..
..Brooklyn(Brooke),Phoenix,Hudson,Eli and Kade.
Obviously they all have their issues and mental health problems..Brooklyn meets each one after being transferred there to take part in some experimental treatment. But Brooklyn has a plan of her own she has gone to Blackwood to die and doesn't intend on lasting until the end of the experiment.
You could say meeting the guys saves her from herself..as she begins to care for each one of them. This story has alot going on and I don't want to say to much.
Except the spice is so freaking HOT..well it is RH..the story though is so well written by J.Rose her writing has you needing the next chapter, and before you know it you have been listening to it for hours.
I loved the narration by Bridget Bordeaux and Grant Armstrong, they did an amazing performance.Putting in so much emotion and making this dark story come alive brilliantly.
J.Rose has written such a tantalizing, captivating and interesting book that is Dark, steamy, emotional, twisted, and depraved...It fascinated me so much even disturbed me a little and I wondered why I loved it and why I found myself enamoured with the characters..lol..I guess I have a dark side.
I definately will be listening to book 2.
Enthralling

“We’re a f*cking family, and families share”

There is always a certain level of darkness that comes to the surface in a book set in a mental health institute. J Rose really knows how to write these particular stories with a mix of care and fantastical storytelling. Every one of Brooklyn’s love interests have such a thorough background that is introduced fluidly and provides a nice emotional connection. Brooklyn herself is fierce while hiding a deep vulnerability, exacerbated by some shady goings-on in Blackwood Institute. The plot is very interesting, with a nice amount of action. While there was a bit of closure to this first installment, the cliffhanger has me hooked and anxious for book 2.

Bridget Bordeaux has such a sultry voice and she did an amazing job differentiating between characters. She really brought the emotions out when it was called for! Grant Armstrong’s accent was amazing but I had a little trouble with his femme voice, as it wasn’t as easy to tell when she was speaking during his chapters. All things considered, he did have a lot of male characters to focus on, so it was fairly easy to overlook on my end.

Brooklyn, Kade, Eli, Phoenix, Hudson

Finally, I can say: Welcome to Blackwood Institute. Where bad girls come to die.

I’ve been meaning to read this book for a while, and I’m so glad I finally started it with the audiobook. The narration was fantastic—Bridget Bordeaux’s voice is phenomenal. Her modulation really brought Brooklyn’s character to life, making her one of the best from J Rose’s repertoire. Grant Armstrong also did a great job voicing the four main male characters—Hudson, Kade, Eli, and Phoenix.

The story is addictive; once you start, you just want to finish. It’s so good that it almost finishes itself. J Rose is my favourite author when it comes to mental health representation, and she handles it so well in all her stories. Brooklyn, a broken FMC, has struggled with her past demons. When she’s transferred to Blackwood, she plans to die. But despite her initial intentions, she reluctantly befriends a group of outcasts who help her adjust and eventually worm their way into her heart. Kade, Phoenix, Eli, and Hudson each have their own challenges, but they form a makeshift family, determined to save Brooklyn from herself.

The dynamic between these characters, their mental health struggles, and their feelings for each other create a dark, intriguing tale. The first book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, and I’m already eager to read the next one. There are mysteries in Blackwood that remain unsolved, and some malicious characters lurking around. I’ve fallen in love with all these flawed characters and can’t wait to see what happens next.

My favourite from J Rose
