About this listen

Fletcher

I’m a total nerd, but I look like a jock. I had a perfect GPA in high school, and my GPA in college is perfect too. I smile when I’m supposed to smile. I have two loving parents and a brother and sister who are always by my side. I’m the perfect all-American guy.

But the only thing that actually defines me is the before. The things I keep hidden deep inside because I’m too afraid of losing what I have now.

The past lives deep inside me as I force the plastic smile on my face. And no one sees through it because I’m just that good.

No one except . . . him.

Ronan

Every day is like a dream. A dream I live, not knowing when I’ll wake and find I’m still living in a nightmare.

I never made it out, and these past few years have all been fake.

Then he walks into my classroom . . . with that cocky smile in place. Not a care in the world. I doubt he’s ever had to worry about a thing in his entire life.

He's exactly like all of the entitled, spoiled brats I teach every day in my part of the college campus, but something about Fletcher Moore really rubs me the wrong way.

I shouldn’t let him get to me, but something about him makes me too angry. Too annoyed.

Just too damn . . . hostile.

I’ve been a fan of this author for a little bit, and I never pass up an opportunity to listen to one of her books. I’ve always enjoyed them in the past and this one was no different. This time I got to enjoy a student/teacher, age gap, M/M, grumpy/sunshine romance. I liked both main characters as well as the friends and found family that made up the secondary characters. On the surface these characters seemed very different but the more I learned about them, the more I realized how far from the truth that was. They both had horrors in their past that shaped their present and the people they were now. Sometimes those past experiences caused them to react in negative, self-destructive ways. Even if they only thought they were protecting themselves. But the journey to happiness for them was entertaining and well-paced and had a fantastic ending. The only thing I didn’t find myself really caring for was that one of the narrators had a tendency to sound a bit high pitched and juvenile when voicing the other main character. It was the one who voices Ronan’s chapters but I’m unsure which of the two male narrators played which. His “Ronan” tone was great. It was just his “Fletcher” tone that I didn’t care for.

My Thoughts on Too Hostile

Too Hostile is a MM student/teacher age gap romance. Let me tell you, these are my most favorite tropes so I was excited to dive into this one. Fletcher is an 18 yr old student in an economics class taught by Ronan, and Ronan dislikes Fletcher because of his nothing bothers me, spoiled attitude. While Fletcher puts on this act, it really is to mask his real feelings and to keep people at a distance, and in reality, his childhood was extremely difficult. Their attraction to each other simmers below the surface, mostly due to Ronan's preconceived notions of Fletcher, but eventually he learns that there is more to Fletcher than he shows. While Fletcher wasn't technically Ronan's student anymore when things crossed the line, he was still a student at the college...and despite the "summer fling" they both kept telling themselves they were having, it ultimately led to more.

This was a fairly quick listen. I love an age gap romance, and throw in the forbidden aspect of a student/teacher romance, and it is like I hit the jackpot. Unfortunately, for me this one fell kind of flat. I didn't quite feel the connection between Fletcher and Ronan, and while I love some spice in my books, this felt like the premise of their relationship was strictly physical. I did enjoy Fletcher's family and Annie but overall this story was just ok for me. I also struggled a little with the narration as I couldn't quite connect with the voices and at times it almost sounded whiny and/or too kiddish.

Nicole Dykes pens another wonderful romance novel, a grump/sunshine, professor/student forbidden romance, an original story that captivates your attention and tugs at your heartstrings the entire time. The world building, character growth and development are fantastic. Fletcher Moore is in college and one of his professors is not very fond of him, and he does not know why. Ronin thinks Fletcher is nothing but a privileged kid riding his parents’ coattails, but he could not have been more wrong. The two bonked heads, and Ronin kept his distance as much as possible, but then he learns who Fletcher really is, the man behind the front he puts up and one with a backstory very similar to his own. I adored Fletcher so much, who he was as a person, his wit, his determination, and his love for his family. I did not appreciate Ronin’s judgement of Fletcher or his assuming and jumping to conclusions. But he sees the errors of his ways and redeems himself somewhat, and after hearing his backstory, I understood him more and where he was coming from. I loved all the layers of the story, a well-written and plotted story that has the perfect balance of drama, angst, heartwarming moments, heartfelt emotions, and a steamy romance. Nicole Dykes, thank you for another fantastic story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 Lance Isley and Elliott Sands did a great job bringing these characters to life and did so with a complete understanding of who they were portraying. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had your feeling them all. These two voice artists are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thanks for the terrific listen.

Loved the narration from Lance Isley and Elliott Sands

Fletcher is in college, one of his professors Ronin thinks Fletcher is privileged kid. But that is further from the truth. They keep clashing . When Ronin finds the truth he see someone with the same background as his own. Realising that he jumped to conclusions. This story has many layers and has drama emotions and the right amount of steam.
