‘The wisest book I’ve read for many years … Much more than a gardening book, much more than a guide to mental health … Hugely recommended’ Stephen Fry

How can gardening relieve stress and help us look after our mental health? What lies behind the restorative power of the natural world?

In a powerful combination of contemporary neuroscience, psychoanalysis and brilliant storytelling, The Well Gardened Mind investigates the magic that many gardeners have known for years – working with nature can radically transform our health, wellbeing and confidence.

With illuminating stories of how people struggling with stress, depression, trauma and addiction can change their lives, this inspiring and wise book of science, insight and anecdote – now translated into fifteen languages – shows how our understanding of nature and its restorative powers is only just beginning to flower.

FINANCIAL TIMES

The wisest book I’ve read for many years … Much more than a gardening book, much more than a guide to better mental health, it is a wholly convincing story of how troubled minds might find a way of reconnecting to themselves and rebuilding confidence and hope by way of nature … I’ve learned so much in the way of the history of psychiatry and psychology as well as practical tips for both mind and garden … Hugely recommended

I found this a fascinating book, however at times it was a bit ‘heady’ and ‘intellectual’. It looks at in great detail the benefits of nature and gardening on our mental and physical wellbeing. Sue Stuart-Smith has thoroughly researched this book and brought much insight to the subject. For me gardening is an escape from the technological world, a refuge and I listened to this book whilst gardening at my Allotment. At times I felt her delivery was a little ‘flat’, I think such a subject could be more emotional and passionately conveyed in the words and delivery. Overall an interesting book that brings home the importance of gardening to the mind, body and spirit and I recommend it! The impact of gardening and gardens reduces so many different mental conditions such as anxiety and depression. Particularly a good book using wonderful words such as ‘ biophilia’.

Interesting and intellectual.

I found this book to be inspirational and cathartic at the same time....

I recommend this book if you want to understand and further your knowledge in the connection of wellbeing and nature. The author manages to articulate a somewhat subjective area into something tangible, with plenty of examples which give support to the underlining question of the link of nature and our personal wellbeing.

I look forward translating this knowledge on………..

This book couldn't have come at a more appropriate time. Published as the world was adjusting to lockdown, The Well Gardened Mind draws comparisons between general mental wellbeing and time spent in green spaces. Many of us have found our lives slowing down as daily routines have been suspended; and in the time which has opened up to us we've discovered - and had the luxury of reflecting on - how fundamentally essential gardening, natural surroundings, and the outside is to us. Sue Stuart-Smith's book gives voice to this realisation, and explains clearly and with insight how we are - as human beings - deeply wedded to nature at a subconscious level.

Insightful and timely
