About this listen

In this late romantic novel, the author explores the powers of telepathy while telling a skilful tale that interweaves suspense with the familiar ingredients of Victorian melodrama.©2014 Audible, Inc. (P)2014 Audible, Inc. Historical Fiction Heartfelt

I love Wilkie Collins's stories. They plunge you into a whole different world and keep you wanting to know what happens next. At the same time, I have to admit this is not one of his best (there's an excellent version of the Moonstone read by Peter Jeffrey on Audible). There's still a lot to enjoy and Samuel West does a great job of keeping you going through the bits that are not so good. I'm left with a few very vivid portrayals and descriptions of places and a rather uneasy feeling towards the protagonist.

Uneven story, really well read

Collins explores his interest in mesmerism. We get a love story. Well told. a bit shmulzy for today's tastes but another good addition to the Collins' repertoire

Another detailed historical romantic story by this brilliant author. Gives a lovely touch of two separated childhood souls following different lives with supernatural connections. Excellent story, highly recommended!

Wilkie Collins was a master at engaging the reader and Samuel West read this book beautifully. I was enthralled from beginning to end

Superb

The usual elements of a Wilkie Collins story are here: dreams and a touch of the supernatural. The characters are well drawn and rounded with side stories that work well. The inevitable conclusion is rather drawn out at the end and that would have been a little trying if it weren't for the wonderful, sympathetic performance of Sam West.

Wonderfully read
