FROM THE PULITZER-WINNING, BOOKER-SHORTLISTED ELIZABETH STROUT COMES A STUNNING STANDALONE NOVEL OF LOVE, LONELINESS AND NEW BEGINNINGS

Artie Dam is a man with a secret. He spends his days teaching history to high schoolers, expanding their young minds, correcting their casual cruelties, and lending a kind word to those who need it most. He goes to holiday parties with his wife of three decades, makes small talk with neighbours, and, on weekends, takes his sailboat out on the beautiful Massachusetts Bay. He is, by all appearances, present and alive. But inside, Artie is plagued by feelings of isolation. He looks out at a world gone mad—at himself and the people around him—and turns a question over and over in his mind: how is it that we know so little about one another, even those closest to us?

And then, one day, Artie learns that life has been keeping a secret from him, one that threatens to upend his entire world. Once he learns it, he is forced to chart a new course, to reconsider the relationships he holds most dear—and to make peace with the mysteries at the heart of our existence.

With exquisite prose and profound insight, Elizabeth Strout captures the way grief reverberates through decades, the comfort found in deep friendships and the freedom that comes when we break free of our secrets. The Things We Never Say is a stunning new novel from one of our most acclaimed observers of the human heart.

'Emotionally stunning, devastatingly wise . . . her best novel yet' RACHEL JOYCE

‘A moving, tender and wise novel about a committed teacher who is utterly confounded by the emotional complexities of daily life. This might be Elizabeth Strout’s best yet’ CLARE CHAMBERS

Strout writes about the domestic, set against the current terrifying world in a way that we can all relate to- it feels overwhelming what is happening so the domestic makes it manageable- and as always, she tells such truths about humanity. The relationship between the protagonist and his son is completely gorgeously affirmatively written- a joyful, deep thread that touches on tragedy but keeps coming back up to love. Complex relationships between other characters mean this never ever becomes trite. Strout is a breathtaking writer- finding it hard to choose a book to follow this!! And wanting to go back and listen all over again . Really lovely and will give you hope for there is still the kindness of strangers even in this dreadful world we are in right now. It doesn't ignore that though- it never feels disconnected, recognises and warns as well as touching the humanity even in those we disagree with. A really affirming, ultimately uplifting book- as all her novelists are.

I loved its thoughtfulness, empathy, ability to express & listen to so many points of view, always with compassion. Not anger… leaving one with much to consider and think about ..

This was a thoroughly enjoyable book about a wonderful teacher called Artie Dam and the complexities of his life as he dealt with his wife, his son and girlfriend, and his students. He was the kind of man that everybody wants to know but he was more complex than anyone could have thought. He changed the lives of so many of his students and was just a wonderful affable person. He found out a very hurtful secret halfway through the book that coloured the rest of his life but he never revealed it. It was very well, read and I enjoyed every minute of it.

The Things We Never Say is wonderful
