In the murky shadows of an alley lies a female’s severed hand. On the tenement rooftop above is the corpse belonging to that hand, a red-haired woman dressed all in black, the body nearly decapitated. Two strands of silver hair — not human — cling to her body. They are Rizzoli’s only clues, but they’re enough for her and medical examiner Maura Isles to make a startling discovery: This violent death had a chilling prequel. Nineteen years earlier, a horrifying murder-suicide in a Chinatown restaurant left five people dead. One woman connected to that massacre is still alive: a mysterious martial arts master who knows a secret she dares not tell, a secret that lives and breathes in the shadows of Chinatown. A secret that may not even be human. Now she’s the target of someone, or something, deeply and relentlessly evil. Cracking a crime resonating with bone-chilling echoes of an ancient Chinese legend, Rizzoli and Isles must outwit an unseen enemy with centuries of cunning — and a swift, avenging blade.

A good story by Tess Gerritson, One that brings her knowledge of American Chinese into the story. The whole thing weaves together beautifully, and has your imagination working to fill in the images and legends described. A master-class.

There is only one thing that I would caution against because it isn't given away with the book blurb, although it does become apparent towards the end; if you find child abuse triggering you might want to give this story a miss. It's certainly not as graphic as some books out there, and shouldn't be a problem for most people, but if you're feeling a bit vulnerable you might want to leave it until you're not as likely to be triggered. Don't be tempted to pass this book by completely though, it's too good for that to happen.

So far I think this story could very well be my favourite Rizzoli and Isles novel, and up until this point I didn't think much could top Ice Cold.

Tanya Eby does a good job with the narration, and that means this is a pleasure to listen to right until the end.

Overall a great attempt at both plot and execution from all concerned.

Will be a firm favorite. 1 of the best R&I's plots

Usual high standard a gripping story where as usual the characters are brought to life and right up to the end you wonder if the ‘right’ thing will be done!

Gripping

This is the first book I have read/listened to by Tess Gerritsen and can highly recommend it , although this is part of a series it did not detract in anyway that I had not read previous books in the series. I have had some very late nights staying up to listen - a gripping, book with superb twists. The reader complimented the book perfectly. I will be listening to others in this series!!
