The night before

Rupert's 30th is a black tie dinner at the Kentish Town McDonald's - catered with cocaine and Veuve Clicquot.

The morning after

His girlfriend Clemmie is found murdered on Hampstead Heath. All the party-goers have alibis. Naturally.

This investigation is going to take Detective Inspector Caius Beauchamp down a rabbit hole of Classics degrees and aristocrats, Instagram influencers and who knows who. Or is it whom? This was a really good story with well-drawn characters. However the male narrator was terrible. Spoke too quickly and indistinctly

The male narrator was really quite bad. His phrasing and stress was all over the place, and he spoke far too quickly for someone who doesn’t enunciate well. His “posh” accents were cringey and were sometimes applied to the wrong character. And if you’re going to narrate a book with Classical references, please look up the pronunciation first.
The female narrator was fine, if not very convincing with male voices.
The story was ok, I just wish I’d read it rather than listened to it.

The male narrator is almost impossible to hear properly, which is a shame as that's half the story! I had to give up as I always listen when I'm out and about and couldn't be bothered to keep rewinding to try and hear what he was saying.

I'm a bit tired of reading about tired depressed detectives with substance issues, so Caius Beauchamp is like a breath of fresh air. The story overall is very good and relevant with complicated undercurrents.

The disappointing part is the male narrator, his chapters were full of mumbling, and at times it even became hard to follow the story because of that.

Does nobody listen to an audio to make sure it sounds good? The male narrator was mumbling his lines to the point, I nearly gave up on it. Quite astonishing there is no quality control.
