We are in the midst of an obesity epidemic, but despite being inundated with diet advice we are only getting fatter. We count calories and exercise regularly, yet still the pounds won't budge. Why?
In this highly enjoyable and provocative book, Dr Jason Fung sets out a groundbreaking new theory: that obesity is caused by our hormones rather than a lack of self-control.
He reveals that overproduction of insulin in the body is the root cause of obesity and obesity-related illnesses including type 2 diabetes and offers robust scientific evidence that reversing insulin resistance is the only way to lose weight in the long term.
It turns out that when we eat is just as important as what we eat, so in addition to his five basic steps - a set of lifelong eating habits that will improve your health and control your insulin levels - Dr Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight - for good.

An extremely methodical written book. Repeats itself just enough to get the point to hit home. I listened at the slowest setting to absorb it more readily.
I have total Faith that Dr Fung has done his research and constantly refers to academic papers and critically analyses them in a manner that I would do myself. This gives me the confidence to trust his opinions without me having to spend the time trawling the internet looking for others opinions. I still do that but after reading the book I already know the answers.
It really is exceptional and would recommend to anyone not just to people trying to lose weight or cure their diabetes.
The narrator is also absolutely superb. This is how I would imagine Dr Fung reading it himself but possible better as it is minus the "right" after nearly every sentence. Just a small critique after Listening to lots of Dr Fung podcasts and YouTube postings.
All round 5 stars and intend on listening to this repeatedly until the belly fat has gone!!
Superb and a Game Changer.

I was always thin in my youth (a size 8, 7-stone teenager). Then, as the decades passed, I got heavier and heavier. In my twenties: 8 stone. Thirties: 9 stone. Forties: 10 stone. Then, approaching fifty, I got on the scales to find myself at 11 stone. That may not sound that heavy but I never got used to the rolls of fat around my stomach, how much harder it was to exercise, how much more cellulite I had. In general, I didn't feel good. And if I kept going, by 90 I was going to be 15 stone and probably dead!! :)
Throughout my thirties and forties, I have tried EVERY diet there is: Weight Watchers, The Cabbage Soup Diet, The Ketogenic Diet, The Atkins Diet, The Juice Diet. I've run for an hour followed by an hour's swim three times a week. I've tried Paul McKenna's I can make you thin hypnosis. Even some crazy guy's advice to pretend you're running from a tiger before you go to sleep at night!!! You name it. I've done it. On each diet, I'd lose 3-7 lbs, plateau, and then put it all back on again, adding another 14 pounds every decade.
I thought I was doing something wrong. I'd feel myself slipping on these diets that weren't maintainable in the long term, and blame myself.
Then I found this book and everything fell into place.
I read this a month ago and gradually built up my fasting regime: 12 hours, then 24, then 36. This week, I've gone 4 days without any problems at all. I make the broth, I take vitamins, I drink lots of water and tea. But I break the rules a bit too. I drink a lot of milky coffee (instead of coffee with cream which makes me retch after drinking that too often on the keto diet) and I still treat myself to a low alcohol beer or two at night.
And even without following the rules to the letter, I've lost 14lbs in a month.
Finally, my weight has taken a turn.
Just buy this book! Best thing I ever did! Best book I've ever bought.
Thank you, Jason Fung.
HARDLY EVER LEAVE REVIEWS, BUT HAD TO FOR THIS

Can be a bit scientific, but overall a good listen

go. Well written with quite a lot of scientific details.
My main beef is that Dr Fung starts by rubbishing most of the scientific thought that has preceeded him. He might be right. He may indeed be the obesity Galileo, but...
I must salute the reader and producer. It is read with gusto and clarity and proper nuance. The reader has actually worked out how to pronounce the tricky names of enzymes and proteins etc. He leaves suitable spaces for commas, full stops, paras and chapter ends. Yippee! It's a relatively dry text that he makes come alive. (If only other audiobooks took as much care, but sadly they read the text as if it was a time trial)
seems very wise advice. brilliantly read
