Kevin Kershaw is on the achy side of fifty, divorced, and spends his days processing insurance claims. It's a far cry from the wondrous future he imagined as a teenager.

Then, one random day, as Kevin drifts through his joyless existence, he stumbles upon a shop that defies belief—possibly the last remaining video shop in England. He eventually ventures in and meets the enigmatic shopkeeper, who presents Kevin with a VHS tape.

Curious, Kevin agrees to watch the tape, and then sits in disbelief as the static clears to reveal a bittersweet childhood memory featuring his late mother—one he knows with absolute certainty was never recorded.

That miracle, as Kevin learns, is a membership perk of The Last Stop Video Shop, but it comes with a caveat—watch one tape, and another will appear.

Faced with the impossible, Kevin must decide whether he's willing to replay more haunting moments from his life… or press eject on it altogether.

The Last Stop Video Shop is a poignant, darkly humorous novel about faltering relationships, abandoned dreams, and a man quietly running out of road.

It’s very hard to come up with new superlatives for Keith Pearson. He’s such a good author that I feel a duty to encourage as many people as possible to read his books. I genuinely feel sorry for people who haven’t yet discovered him, because they’re missing so much. At the same time, I’m slightly jealous of them, because they still have the joy of discovering his books for the first time. I’ve read them all, and I can’t tell you how frustrating it is waiting for the next one.

Last Stop Video Shop is unlike any of his previous books. I’m tempted to say that it’s his best yet, but then I seem to say that after every new release. Maybe he really is getting better and better. Or perhaps each new book simply reminds me how exceptionally good he is.

I get through a huge number of audiobooks, mainly because I spend two or three hours a day listening to Audible while out walking in the countryside. Very few authors make me genuinely eager for the next release in the way Keith Pearson does. In fact, I start feeling slightly depressed as I near the end of one of his books, because I know there’s going to be a long wait before the next arrives.

The Last Stop Video Shop centres on Kevin Kershaw, a man who seems to have missed a few turnings in life and drifted into a dead-end existence. Keith Pearson has an extraordinary gift for creating characters who feel completely real. You don’t just follow them, you know them. You empathise with them, get frustrated by their mistakes, and feel genuine joy when things finally begin to go right.

I don’t think I can really do this book justice by trying to explain the plot. It’s layered, funny, moving, and wonderfully human. What I can say is this: please read this book, and if you haven’t discovered Keith Pearson already, start now. Just be warned, once you’ve read one, you’ll want to go right back to the beginning and read them all. And what a journey that is.

The narrator, Christian Neale, also deserves enormous credit. He does the book full justice and brings the characters vividly to life. A good audiobook narrator can elevate a story, and that is exactly what happens here. His delivery captures both the humour and the emotional moments perfectly, and after a while you stop hearing a narrator and simply believe in the characters themselves.
