About this listen

THE GLADIATOR is the compelling ninth novel in Simon Scarrow's bestselling Eagles of the Empire series. A must read for fans of Bernard Cornwell.

While centurions Macro and Cato are returning to Rome from a harrowing campaign against the Parthians, their transport ship is almost capsized by a tidal wave. They barely make it to the port of Matala in Crete where they are stunned to find a devastated town. An earthquake has struck the island, destroying its cities and killing thousands. In the chaotic aftermath, large bands of the island's slaves begin to revolt and local bandits, taking advantage of the slave rebellion, urge the Cretans to overthrow the Roman administration. With many of the island's troops either killed or wounded during the earthquake, the governor of the province calls on Macro and Cato for help. Can they move swiftly enough to counter the rebellion before it sweeps the Romans from the island?

Praise for Simon Scarrow: 'I really don't need this kind of competition... It's a great read' (Bernard Cornwell)
A new book in Simon Scarrow's series about the Roman army is always a joy
Gripping... ferocious and compelling, it is a story of blood, romance and sacrifice
Rollicking good fun
A satisfyingly bloodthirsty, bawdy romp...perfect for Bernard Cornwell addicts who will relish its historical detail and fast-paced action. Storming stuff

it sucks you into a world of combat, politics and friendship. Refusing to let you go until you know the fate of each character. It let's you like every character and begrudgingly you respect the bad guys.
I will be revisiting this author again.

great story that sucks you into another world

Excellent story line with twist and turns very gripping. Great to see Jonathan Keebler back in charge of the first class performance.

I love all the series, and can't get enough of Cato and Macro's adventures, and this book is no exception. in fact, I personally think, this is the best book in the series so far.
After an earthquake releases the slaves on the island of Crete, one man rises to take command of them sll. He has one goal, kill as many Romans as possible. Although he hates all Romans, he particularly hates two Officers with every fibre of his being , the two men that crucified his father and made him a slave. And the gods seem to be in in his favour, because those very two officers just happen to be on the Island of Crete as well. Now Cato and Macro have the challenge of their life.

Cato and Macro's greatest challenge

Again
Great sojourn into real Ronan history. The voices of the main characters do change from book to book. I do wish the original deep uncut gruff comical voice Macro and the higher tuned slightly bemused sarcastic refined voice of Cato is kept throughout the series.

Another wonderful listen
