When DCI Harry Nelson calls Ruth Galloway in to investigate a body found inside a buried fighter plane, she quickly realizes that the skeleton couldn't possibly be the pilot. DNA tests identify the man as Fred Blackstock, a local aristocrat who had been reported dead at sea.
Events are further complicated by a TV company that wants to make a film about Norfolk's deserted air force bases, the so-called Ghost Fields, which have been partially converted into a pig farm run by one of the younger remaining Blackstocks.
Then human bones are found on the farm and, as the greatest storm Norfolk has seen for decades brews in the distance, another Blackstock is attacked. Can the team outrace the rising flood to find the killer?

Critic reviews
Elly Griffiths writes ever-more ingenious detective stories with a powerful sense of place and a varied cast of sympathetic and unusual characters. Her heroine is a winner
Griffiths weaves superstition and myth into her crime novels, skilfully treading a line between credulity and modern methods of detection
What three words best describe Clare Corbett’s performance?
Good, as long as she isn't reading a male part, then appalling - makes all male characters sound like 80 year olds with chest infections.Any additional comments?
These books are a guilty pleasure. I like the characters and the books are easy listening, when I am washing up or doing the cooking, but I hate the way the reader makes the male characters sound like geriatric chain smokers. The books are written in an historic present style, which can grate on occasion, but the story line tends to engross me deeply enough that it isn't a deal breaker.Flawed performance but entertaining nonetheless

My favourite so far has to be Book 6 because of the Arthurian theme, but this definitely measures up. I lived in Suffolk for 20 years and it's true that in East Anglian the wartime airfields are all around you; it's not hard to imagine what it must have been like for those young - so very young - men.
Elly Griffiths has produced another excellent mystery here, and it's good to follow the characters as they develop; even though for my favourite, Cathbad, that seems to mean slipping slightly from a sort of heroic mystical omnipotence to being a mere mortal like the rest of us. Ruth is still as introspective as ever and even after 7 books still seems to hesitate and dither when she should go with her gut instinct, but that's who she is. The pompous Phil is still as ghastly, and there's an interesting twist with Nelson and Michelle.
All this rolls out to a background of murder and Bronze Age discoveries. Lovely stuff - I'm looking forward to Book 8.
p.s. I love the rubber duck!
