"Between the thick fur and my own nerves, it took longer than it should’ve to find the fluttering proof of his heartbeat. I’d known he was alive since he didn’t smell like death. No...he smelled like...home. Like my home. The one place where I would always belong.

Lucian Smith, unwanted at birth, is a defiant alpha who’d not only dare anyone to call him unclaimed, he’d proudly display the proof. He doesn’t want or need a pack other than the family he’s built with his crew - the West Coast Wolves. For so long, it was just them - an unlikely pack of alphas who took to the open road and helped where they could, doing random acts of kindness and expecting nothing in return.

Until the first of one of them stepped up when duty called and took his own pack to rule. This ended the brothers-in-arms’ days of riding wherever the road took them when fate conspired to give each of the brothers a pack to rule. Even Lucian... the unlikely defiant alpha who would not only dare anyone to call him unclaimed, but proudly display the proof.

While out on a night’s ride, Lucian comes across a half-dead dog on the side of the road. After stopping to help, he discovers it’s no dog, it’s a shifter - an omega wolf. The true mate Lucian never dared hoped for is now in his arms, if he can just rescue him first. Little does he know there are a dozen more omegas who need saving; his mate is just the start.

With a secret over 20 years old and millions of dollars at stake, the people who stole innocent babies with plans for the ultimate payday won’t let go of them easily. Except, even omegas have hidden strength and their own ways to fight back. With the help of his crew, Lucian is in a unique position to help these lost young men and set right to old wrongs.

This is the second book about finding joy in a hard world, building a family, and discovering that life can surprise a person when they least expect it. Although this world has harsher themes than my previous books, it still has the same heart you’d expect. Plus a dose of my irreverent humor and all the naughty, knotty heat that comes with true mates. It wouldn’t be a Susi Hawke book without it.

Note: possible trigger warning for mentions of stillbirth, medical abuse, and child abduction.

Lucian is unashamed of being an unmarked Alpha and found his family with the fellow Alphas of the West Coast Wolves. When he finds his mate near death ont he side of the road, he never could have imagined what Thirteen will bring into his life. Thirteen has had a very sheltered and tragic life but with the help of his brothers, he tries to find help for them with an escape.

You will find yourself absolutely drawn in by Nick's talent at bringing an unique voice to each character. Amazing as always.

Defiant at its best

I loved book one of the West Coast Wolves and have looked forward the The Defiant Alpha and Lucian's story since the teaser at the end of the first book.
Lucian is a strong alpha but as an unmarked, a lot of people would turn him away as their alpha. The pack he takes over for his friend are really welcoming and a place that can really become his home. Whilst riding his motorbike around the local area he comes across an injured dog, quickly discovering it's actually his fated mate. Thirteen has managed to escape a place many would only think of in horror stories, he had to run for his life, getting injured in the process. He's hoping to get help and go back to rescue his brothers but never anticipated meeting his fated mate.
Together, along with the pack and their friends, there's a rescue mission to complete, Drama, action, pain and recovery are big parts of this story alongside the romance that develops between Lucian and Thirteen. Both men never envisioned having a mate for themselves and it's really sweet as they build up trust and love, something neither man has had much of in their lives.
There's a great cast of characters in both men's lives. We still get to hear from others of the West Coast wolves and then Lucian's new pack have some lovely, welcoming people. Thirteen's brothers are such sweet men, all deserving of their own HEA's and the men in chance at the facility are well written villains of the story.
Nick gives a great performance throughout the story, a lot of strong emotion coming through with everything that happens. It's easy to enjoy the lighter moments that are well balanced by the gravitas of the heart-wrenching, tough moments of escape, rescue and moving on.

A good second book in this series

The story: I think this was overall a good, entertaining story. I got lost with all the brothers and the renaming but still good. I hope the brothers are not forgotten as the series goes on and we see them all again. Also, that birthing scene was definitely the craziest.

The Narration: Nick Russo does a great job bringing this story to like and even with the addition of all the brothers, it was easy enough to follow who was speaking once I remembered which brother it was.

I liked it

Lucien hasn't been the Alpha of his new pack for long when his wolf is urging him to leave the vineyard and go for a ride on his motorcycle, he doesn't know where he's going but knows he needs to trust his wolf. suddenly he knows why his wolf was so aggitated, his mate is here and needs him! Thirteen has escaped from his prison but he has now found his fated mate. Nick J. Russo did a great job narrating the book.second book in the series and absolutely fantastic, lots of angst and passion, some distressing topics covered but done in context to the story.

Finally found their home.

Susi Hawke delivers more awesomeness to her “West Coast Wolves” series! I am loving this series, the characters are amazing, they and the world she created are fascinating and imaginative. There is never a dull moment in this book and the story is captivating from start to end. I recommend starting the series with the first book, “The Reluctant Alpha” not only is it an awesome book but you’ll have more history of the Alphas of the series and they grouped together and then came into their own packs. Lucian Smith is the new Alpha leader of the Tehachapi pack in Southern California, they run a successful winery but the sense of pack family is lacking and Lucian is going to change that and make it a better pack. In the beginning of the book we meet a group of omegas held captive who are using their gifts to communicate, they are referred to by their number. We learn more about them and how they came about as the story goes on. An outsider, Alex, befriended number Thirteen telepathically and he agreed to help him escape which he does but not without injury. Alex told him where he should go to be safe and get help, but because of injuries he never made it to his destination. He is found by the side of the road and is rescued by none other than his fated mate. I loved how everything plays out in this book, the story moves quickly and is nicely plotted with a perfect balance of drama, a touch of angst, thrilling and suspenseful moments, heartfelt and emotional moments, some lighthearted humor, and some hot romance. Susi Hawke thank you for another enjoyable and entertaining story, I loved every minute of it.

🎧📚🎧 And for the fabulous narration, Nick J. Russo continues to bring these characters to life, giving each their own distinct voice making it easy to follow along and tell who is who. He is awesome at portraying the characters, grasping each persona and playing the role with perfection, sounding just as I picture them to sound the entire time. He set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the character’s emotions and projected them into his performance. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another awesome listen!

I am Loving the West Coast Wolves! Fantastic🎧📚🎧
