THE RETURN OF FIN MACLEOD, PETER MAY'S MUCH-LOVED HERO OF THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLING LEWIS TRILOGY.

A MURDER

The body of eighteen-year-old TV personality Caitlin is found abandoned on a remote beach at the head of An Loch Dubh - the Black Loch - on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis. A swimmer and canoeist, it is inconceivable that she could have drowned.

A SECRET

Fin Macleod left the island ten years earlier to escape its memories. When he learns that his married son Fionnlagh had been having a clandestine affair with the dead girl and is suspected of her murder, he and Marsaili return to try and clear his name.

A RECKONING

But nothing is as it seems, and the truth of the murder lies in a past that Fin would rather forget, and a tragedy at the cages of a salmon farm on East Loch Roag, where the tense climax of the story finds its resolution.

The Black Loch takes us on a journey through family ties, hidden relationships and unforgiving landscapes, where suspense, violent revenge and revelation converge in the shadow of the Black Loch.©2024 Peter May

Critic reviews

A twisty, atmospheric read
This is a powerful exploration of human depravity and excessive family loyalty, set in glorious surroundings.
Laced with melancholy, this is May at his very best . . . Do not miss it, it is unforgettable. (Daily Mail)
The Black Loch combines all the elements which propelled May to literary stardom: a likeable but deeply flawed protagonist, a plot that is centred on an island for which May clearly has an abiding love, and a narrative that unwinds slowly but surely through the inevitable twists and red herrings.
Atmospheric, evocative, tense and compelling, this thought-provoking drama is another triumph from the master of moody crime.
The brilliantly atmospheric setting of this Hebridean mystery casts a powerful spell.
An atmospheric and beautifully written book. This may be a chilling and enthralling crime thriller, but Peter May's prose is exquisite, creating a sense of place brilliantly. The imagery surrounding the natural landscape is transformative, making the setting every bit as important as character or plot.

I have nothing but praise for the Black Loch. The writing is superlative and the marriage of Peter Forbes narration with a great story makes it an extraordinary experience.

I am transported to Lewis totally. If you have never been there, then this book is enough. I am minded to revist the island.
