About this listen
They wanted a safe haven for the gifted. They built a powder keg instead.
Elias Wren never expected his first year at Vanguard Academy to feel like stepping into a warzone. Power comes early for Primeborn children—ice, fire, sound, sand, light—and the world fears what it cannot control. Vanguard promises protection and mastery, but behind its fortified walls lie secrets, tensions, and ghosts from battles fought long before the students were born.
Jace Harrow arrives under a darker cloud: rumored unstable, dangerously powerful, and already drawing the attention of factions beyond Vanguard. He and Elias form an unlikely bond—one that becomes the heart of the academy’s new generation and the spark that will define the future.
But enemies are closing in. Human extremists, Sovereign radicals, and cosmic forces none of them yet understand. And when tragedy strikes, the students learn their first terrible truth:
At Vanguard, innocence ends fast—and power always has a price.
Book One of the Primeborn Saga begins an epic journey of loyalty, trauma, rising power, and the choices that will decide whether the world breaks… or transforms.

I am a cozy mystery fan at heart but there was something about this book that caught my attention and i am so glad I gave it ago. As I really liked the characters, although I did struggle keeping them straight in the beginning as we were introduced to so many all at once but as we got to know them if became easier and I could just enjoy. The different personalities and powers worked well and I could see them become a great team until well they didn't. The slow disintegration of the friendship was easy to see happen but still had you routing for both sides to make it to the end of the book because the author makes you care about all the characters, well there's one of two that need taking care of.
There was plenty of action and drama and I am glad the author didn't go with the usual drift over a girl. I think this might be the first time I have said a can't wait for the next school year to begin or the next book.
A new school year is about to start and the Vanguard Academy is about to start training there most powerful group of children in history. Friendships will form and teams will be built, as the next generation of super hero's learn how to control there powers. The problem is there enemies, the Sovereign radicals who believe super hero's are superior to humans and should not let them dictate what they can and can not, are aware that two children could very possible be the ones talked about in the prophecies. And they will stop at nothing to get there hands on the chosen one Elias or Jace.
I loved the narrator. She was amazing and so versatile with all the different voices needed to make this story super. She even did accents. I think she has to be up there as one of the better narrators I have heard and I have heard a lot.
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
