About this listen

A gripping tale of espionage and murder in Elizabethan London.

London, 1590. Queen Elizabeth I's control over her kingdom is wavering. Amidst a tumultuous backdrop of Spanish plotters, Catholic heretics and foreign wars threatening the country's fragile stability, the body of a small boy is found in the City of London, with strange marks that no one can explain.

When idealistic physician Nicholas Shelby finds another body displaying the same marks only days later, he becomes convinced that a killer is at work, preying on the weak and destitute of London.

Determined to find out who is behind these terrible murders, Nicholas is joined in his investigations by Bianca, a mysterious tavern keeper. As more bodies are discovered, the pair find themselves caught in the middle of a sinister plot. With the killer still at large, and Bianca in terrible danger, Nicholas's choice seems impossible - to save Bianca, or save himself....

At first I wasn’t keen on the narrator although his voice grew on me and by the end I was enjoying the clean way Kris read.

The start was a bit grisly and the whole child dissection thing made me want to turn it off! I persevered though and as our hero went off the rails and ends up half drowned in a tavern, I warmed to the story as well as the narrator.

Switching from the first person between characters felt a bit strange but helped to understand each character better.

Overall a good choice if you like Shardlake and / or lots of detail and clever plotting in your novels. I’ll be getting the next one.

Enjoyable detailed historical novel

Really enjoyed this book as I am a huge fan of S J Parris and C J Sansome. It was a little long in places with much detail but overall, a very enjoyable listen.

Very enjoyable and very well read

An interesting tale set in Elizabethan times, with a good cast of characters brought to life by the excellent narration of Kris Dyer. Each character was quite clear to me. A gruesome time and a gruesome subject but no unnecessary dwelling on the disgusting details. An intriguing whodunnit. Excellent entertainment.

Great story and characters, well read
