Survivor at Law is a gripping memoir of narcissistic abuse, coercive control, and a weaponized legal system, told by attorney Dovie King. She shares her unflinching story of trauma, betrayal, and the fight to reclaim her voice—offering insight and empowerment for anyone who has felt trapped, silenced, or overlooked.

A proud Latina, public interest lawyer, and educator, Dovie spent her career fighting for others while privately enduring a relationship that would test everything she believed about justice—culminating in many years of a legal battle and divorce that exposed the dark side of the system meant to protect her, but also sparked her transformation. This is not a story of blame. It’s a story of survival.

Calling someone names doesn’t tell me you healed from what you went through. It says you’re still bitter. I’ve always understood that lingering in the past governs your future. Lucky this is memoir because if it was self help I would say you can’t help others heal if you’re still bitter.

This isn’t to say that the testimony isn’t any less powerful. The fact that you choose a man that presented himself more than what he actually was and came out of the horror of it all is definitely moving and inspiring. Helping others out of similar circumstances is also wonderful. Inspiring especially for women who find themselves trapped as well. Wonderfully empowering.

Not a how to book, which makes sense since every victim/survivor and abuser and their circumstances are different. This is one survivor’s story and detailed information about what she experienced, how she survived, how she escaped and how she started to live again. She is a successful attorney and a confident woman so this displays it can truly happen to anyone! While not a roadmap to survival, it is reassuring that abuse is survivable.

This was an incredible story of courage and strength. I was hooked right from the beginning. The woman’s story is raw, and to know it’s a memoir hurts my heart. To know myself, and other woman have experienced similar trauma is frustrating. What’s interesting is not only does this memoir explore themes of abuse, control, trauma responses, but also gives an inside perspective how the legal system can fail victims. The biggest kicker is the survivor herself is a lawyer too. The story has strong themes, but is truly a meaningful listen. As a survivor or even somebody who has a loved one who has survived. This is a perfect memoir of reclaiming your power as well as your voice! I’d definitely recommend this title.

Reflective and Emotionally Inspiring Story.

An absolutely enlightening story of surviving an abusive narcissistic relationship. The reader also gets a lot of information and viewpoints of the law. That this relationship happened to an attorney, this gives us a fresh viewpoint to an old story

Survivor at Law was emotionally heavy but incredibly powerful because it approached trauma, narcissistic abuse and family court battles with raw honesty instead of trying to sanitize the experience. What affected me most was hearing how manipulation and psychological exhaustion slowly unfolded over time while still being difficult for outsiders to fully recognize. The author’s background in law added another layer of insight because it showed how weaponized divorce and custody systems can sometimes intensify emotional abuse instead of protecting victims. The story balanced legal realities with personal reflections on fear, resilience, parenting and reclaiming identity after prolonged emotional damage. The narration carried genuine emotion without sounding overly dramatic which made the experience feel intimate and believable. This is not an easy listen because many sections are heartbreaking and frustrating but it is an important and validating book for anyone wanting a clearer understanding of coercive control and survival after narcissistic abuse.

Painfully Honest Memoir About Abuse and Survival
