Story is fine as usual with this series but I find the narration a bit off putting. The reader makes all the Scottish men sound like they’re about to burst in to laughter or in the case of the main characters sidekick, make him sound like a dumb schoolboy. The female characters then mostly come across as smug or superior, which again is mostly due the the tone of the narration as opposed to the actual text. I still listen to them though but if the narrator could adjust her tone of reading I think the experience would be a lot better.

A complex plot as one would expect from this author with the leading DS Karen Pirie breaking rules but getting the job done . Driving at 110 mph even with flashing lights whilst intelligently discussing a separate case strained credulity as did her skills in tracking down her injured wingman. The first lockdown and preparation suggests the background of the next book eagerly awaited.

Once started I could not put this book down it had me wanting to listen right up until the finish. Brilliant characters with a great ending.

I've read a lot of Val Mcdermid over the years. The standard has always been high, but this book is one of her very best. Also, great to see her increasingly bringing some political commentary into the narrative at the margins.
