From critically acclaimed Irish horror writer A.M. Shine, the sequel to The Watchers, now adapted into a major motion picture produced by M. Night Shyamalan.

YOU MAY HAVE ESCAPED... BUT YOU'LL NEVER BE FREE.

After her terrifying experience at the hands of the Watchers, Mina has escaped to a cottage on the west coast of Ireland. She obsessively researches her former captors, desperate to find any way to prolong the safety of humankind.

When Mina encounters a stranger near her home, she fears the worst – for she knows the figure is not what it seems. Soon, people she has encountered start to disappear.

Mina knows the Watchers' power is growing. She flees for her life, but when she reports her fears she finds her sanity questioned. Can she convince people that the Watchers are real, and ready to strike – or will she suffer the fate she has dreaded since she first encountered those malevolent beings?

A chilling modern twist on the Gothic horror novel, perfect for fans of Kealan Patrick Burke, T. Kingfisher and classic horror.©2024 A.M. Shine (P)2024 Bloomsbury Publishing PLC

Critic reviews

The novel exudes melancholy and isolation, evoking dread over the ancient and unstoppable Watchers. The descriptions of loss are sharp... In the terrifying fantasy novel Stay in the Light, those who escaped the Watchers live with the consequences of their survival.
Shine’s writing is stellar and once again, this world is brought alive through that wonderful writing, and the amazing characters... A stellar sequel and one that will make many readers very happy.
Action sequences play out like a supernatural version of John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13... a very atmospheric book, which develops the mythology explored in the original novel to something more fully formed
A gripping and masterfully written sequel that delves deeper into the world of Celtic lore, delivering a magnificently terrifying reading experience
Captures desperation and helplessness masterfully, leaking terror and infecting readers with a pervading sense of paranoia that comes with knowing the truth... a must-read

Almost impossible to guess what would happen next! Suspenseful and gripping. In some points it is genuinely scary, overall a good listen with good narration. I like the mythology woven into the story. Hopefully there is another…?

By the end, I'd decided this was as good as the first book, but the first 6 chapters should have been compressed into 1 or more interest and detail added. Those early chapters made me dislike Mina because there was a lot of musing and no action. But stick with it. The narration was excellent throughout. The character arcs were good. The ending is satisfying. Would recommend.

takes the first book & elevates the whole world. we get more about the fae, woven into myth whilst being a superb horror book. I can't wait for the next one.

absolutely brilliant

Not as good as the first book, performance however makes the book easy to listen to. There’s some tension throughout but builds to a cliffhanger where you can tell the author hopes to get a 3rd book out. Mildly disappointing and reads like word soup a lot of the time.
