About this listen

A dialect is a regional or social variant of a language, typically influenced by regional or social background. Dialects can be distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and accents.

Yorkshire is the largest county in England and has a vast range of dialects to match. The Sheffield dialect is one of the greatest historical assortments of English. The Sheffield dialect has numerous shortenings to its words and phrases. Towns that surround Sheffield, such as Barnsley, Chesterfield, and Doncaster, nicknamed the residents of Sheffield "dee-dars". This is because Sheffielders are famously known to use the sound of d, instead of the traditional pronunciation of th. Dialect words such as "thee" and "thou" end up sounding like "dee" and "daa", hence the derived nickname "dee-dars".
