Alan Sillitoe was an integral part of the Angry Young Men movement of the fifties that focused on its authentic depiction of real working class people. This book is true to their ideals in its raw sharp writing of the story of a young man framed by his brutal experience in the army and as a factory worker.

Fuelled by a bleak aggressive outlook on life the book centers around a boozy, philandering weekend which is graphically captured by Sillitoe's clever prose and Linus Roache's strong reading.

Huge chunks of the novel have been clumsily removed to create this abridged version. With little pause given between key scenes, it left me wondering if I'd accidentally brushed my phone and sped forward to the next chapter. There are intermittent jazz interludes between the chapters that seem at odds with the story, and we're frankly irritating. This recording is saved by the sheer talent of Linus Roache whose voice lifts the dialect, skipping and dragging to the beat of the pros,If you want to get the full story read the book.

Heavily edited, unnecessary Jazz

It was a very good reading of the classic novel. The Jazz interludes are a little intrusive, but Linus Roache truly captured the essence of the characters in his exceptional performance, of Sillitoe's timeless masterpiece.

Very enjoyable reading

Disappointed The unabridged version was not available on audible and the music is annoying but gave it 5 stars as I enjoyed the story & performance

Would it really have been so difficult to find s voice actor who doesn’t think Nottingham is in Yorkshire?
