About this listen

The Sunday Times no. 1 bestseller

The British Royal Family believed that the dizzy success of the Sussex wedding, watched and celebrated around the world, was the beginning of a new era for the Windsors. Yet, within one tumultuous year, the dream became a nightmare. In the aftermath of the infamous Megxit split and the Oprah Winfrey interview, the Royal Family's fate seems persistently threatened.

As Meghan and Harry's much-trailed Netflix documentary finally airs, the public remains puzzled. Meghan's success has alternatively won praise, bewildered and outraged. Confused by the Sussexes' slick publicity, few understand the real Meghan Markle. What lies ahead for Meghan? And what has happened to the family she married into? Can the Windsors restore their reputation?

With extensive research, expert sourcing and interviews from insiders who have never spoken before, Tom Bower, Britain's leading investigative biographer, unpicks the tangled web of courtroom drama, courtier politics and thwarted childhood dreams to uncover an astonishing story of love, betrayal, secrets and revenge.

Utterly dreadful behaviour from both Meghan and Harry. America is welcome to them. The Diana obsession is crazy.

What a pair of spoilt brats.

I haven't read a Tom Bowers book before but this one didn't disappoint. Yes, much of it is already in the media domain, but I felt all the facts were checked carefully. Going through so much in date order has highlighted to me just how determined MM is and how she reeled Harry in, a gullible idiot taken in by someone who told him his "truth" was relevant. She is artful, seduced him and like many before her told a gullible man everything he needed to hear. He wants to leave the RF? Yes, darling, lets do it together. I can't believe so much acrimony came from a fall out between two women over a bridesmaid dress. MM undoubtedly stressed as her wedding approached, Catherine only a few weeks from having given birth to Louie. My impression was that Catherine decided to be gracious and send flowers to MM to clear the air acknowledging its MM's big day. Who knows, but it seems very spiteful if this is the only occasion MM can complain of The Duchess of Cambridge TBH. There's frankly little that can be described as pleasant, there are some who give a wholesome opinion of the Sussex's but as Tom Bower says all these people are spoken to he has an abundance of people who demonstrate the mistrustful and scheming nature of them. MM doesn't do social media she says! Who believes that for a start? Her life seems to be one long round of taking offence at all that is done & said when she gets a negative opinion. I was rooting for this couple when they announced their engagement, but became very disillusioned as matters unfolded and find them vindictive and avaricious. I doubt the Sussex fans will want to read this book, but they really should.

Thank you, Tom Bower, for your meticulous research and excellent writing. It all needed to be said. Andrew Wiincott was the perfect choice to read this book. So glad I will never have to deal with Harry or Meghan. I pity their children, growing up without an extended family, which they could so easily have had, had it not been for Meghan's raging personal ambition.

Appalling tale of self-interest on a massive scale

This is the crucial follow up to Lady Colin Campbell's biography of the couple, bringing us up to date, and going further into every key event that was not included in her scope. Whilst coming to any conclusion other than that they are self aggrandising, greedy grifters with no sense of decency or respect for anybody would be impossible, the author does not force that conclusion on you. In fact it seems like he displays a grudging respect for the havoc that one woman has been able to wreak on a British institution and the huge con she's been playing on us here and across the pond for these past years. And indeed you have to hand it to her. She's outdone herself, but Tom Bower has revealed her con to us so we'll see how long it is before we get another reinvention from her, and her marriage to Haz is confined to the history books.

Lays it all out

I can't stand Meghan & Harry. They have hurt the British Royal Family which in my opinion is unforgivable. I cannot understand how the courts keep on finding in favour of these 2 even tho' it is more than obvious they have been in the wrong. I for one still have high regard for the Queen, Prince Charles & the Cambridges. I hope Harry & Meghan loose their titles & people in the UK will not have them back. They are totally poisenous.
