Summary

‘Relentless pace, devilish cleverness and a laser-sharp focus on plot.’ Chris Brookmyre

‘Without doubt, this is one of the best detective series I have read.’ Woman’s Way Magazine

There’s no easy way to die…

Unknown to DI Luc Callanach and the newly promoted DCI Ava Turner, a serial killer has Edinburgh firmly in his grip. The killer is taking his victims in the coldest, most calculating way possible – engineering slow and painful deaths by poison, with his victims entirely unaware of the drugs flooding their bloodstream until it’s too late.

But how do you catch a killer who hides in the shadows? A killer whose pleasure comes from watching pain from afar? Faced with their most difficult case yet, Callanach and Turner soon realise they face a seemingly impossible task…

I'm thoroughly enjoying these, so much more since the narrator was changed after the first book.
I loved this one, best yet, really good character development, really glad to see the journalist back again too.
Will be downloading book 4 when I've submitted this.

Definitely the best one yet

For an old dodderer I have to acknowledge that this DI Callanach tale might be described as a touch over ambitious. I've much enjoyed the two earlier stories but I found Perfect Death hopped between cases and individual elements too much to follow readily. I shall read Books 4 and beyond!!

Too Patchy And Difficult To Follow

Thank you Helen Fields. You don’t disappoint. After 3 disappointing reads from other authors, this book made up for it all.

Brilliant story, brilliant characters. Keeps you on tenterhooks throughout.

Hope the next book in this series is on its way.

Great read

Really enjoyed listening. The story was complex and even though I worked out the murderer. It didn't detract from my enjoyment. Narration was good and kept me listening. Definitely going to listen to more books in this series.

Great new series!

Two separate crime stories, that don't combine at all except for the police officers involved, are told in parallel often with abrupt switches that can be confusing for a minute or so. One story is about a criminal gang and the other a serial killer: the latter with a preposterous motive, but this is fiction so realism isn't of first importance. There are a lot of characters to keep track of and many are two-dimensional making it more difficult to remember what part they play in the narrative. The serial killer story is the more gripping, but both stories are well-crafted so I was disappointed that the author trotted out the tediously familiar clichés of detective fiction: e.g. feisty woman detective who goes out on a limb and breaks the rules and a has a boss who gives bollickings peppered with swear words and the eponymous detective of the series, DI Callanach, having a painful back story. How I wish writers of detective fiction would be more imaginative and avoid writing to a formula. There are over-long scenes between Callanch and his emotionally manipulative mother during which there is a revelation that hangs in the air and is never resolved in the book It just clogged up an already complicated book. A saving grace for me is that the novels are set in my home town and I like being able to recognize the locations.
The narrator is excellent.

Gripping stories marred by clichés of the genre
