Summary

’Till death do us part may come sooner than they thought....

The year 1934. Kitty Underhay steps out of the battered Rolls Royce and onto the graveled driveway of Thurscomb Castle in deepest Yorkshire. She’s honored to be a bridesmaid at her cousin Lucy’s wedding to the reluctant Lord Rupert Woodcomb, but as family and friends gather for welcome drinks, Kitty dodges intrusive questions about her own marital status by taking a stroll about the castle grounds. As she passes through the manicured gardens, a fatal shot rings out....

The valet, Evans, is dead. And Kitty can’t help but notice how rattled the man standing next to him seems. Could Rupert’s best man, The Right Honorable Alexander "Sandy" Galsworthy, believe the speeding bullet was meant for him?

When she discovers that Sandy has been receiving blackmail notes, Kitty suspects that one of the assembled guests has plans to make good on their threats. The local constabulary won’t act on Kitty’s hunch, so, busy with her bridesmaid’s duties, she asks her beau, ex-army captain Matthew Bryant, to help.

The ceremony passes without a hitch. But when an anxious Sandy slips away during the dancing, Matt follows, only to make a hideous discovery: Sandy is dead, flattened on the terrace by some falling masonry.

Now the duo are sure that there is a murderer within the castle walls. But can they untangle Sandy’s final hours and catch this killer before they strike again, or will the wedding bells be replaced by a death knell for Kitty herself?

A completely charming cozy historical Golden Age murder mystery! Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, T.E. Kinsey, and Lee Strauss.

The Miss Underhay Mystery series was previously narrated by Alex Tregear, who is now beginning a new adventure as she trains to be an occupational therapist.

This series has been my favourite but the new narrator makes Kitty sound like a spoilt posh brat. Can't even finish it. I won't be buying any more.

Can't listen to this new narrator

I agree with the other reviews which say that, whilst they are not bad, the new narrator has changed the the personalities of the main characters by making them more formal and plummy.
I have looked forward to the release of each new book in the series but I am finding it hard to finish this one and unlikely to buy the next one in audio format.

Narration spoils the book

I love Helena Dixon and this series the original narrator was excellent and was Kitty in my head. Sadly Polly could of worked if she had been given much more guidance about the narration and character voices. Kitty sounded far to posh, it was really off putting, I couldn't concentrate and kept loosing interest I wasn't as engaged it took me several attempts to finish this book. So had forgotten what was going on. The next one I have purchased and it's narrated by Karen Cass who I love, she is fantastic on the Verity Bright series Lady Eleanor Swift Mysteries. So I am expecting a great performance. This story was good in general, if I had been more engaged I would be able to say more.

love the series shame about the narration

What a disappointment! I was so looking forward to this book as I’ve become totally hooked on the Miss Underhay series. However, the change in narrator has unfortunately completely ruined the whole experience. I was considering how to get my money back because everything about the new narration is wrong. I think Kitty’s grandmother is about the only plausible voice. I therefore agree with the other reviews completely. Miss Edsell perhaps should have listened more carefully to the previous narrator and tried to match the voices a bit better — these new voices sound forced and over the top. Kitty now sounds like a 50 year old stuffy countess and Matt sounds arrogant and hard when we have come to know these characters as quite the opposite. The narration has completely changed the whole story, the voices aren’t distinct enough either so you’re not immediately sure who is speaking and so I found it hard to get into and hard to follow. In fact only finished it because I kept hoping the voices would change and improve. They did not. Sadly, I won’t listen to any more of the Miss Underhay mystery series now unless there is a change in narrator. This is not a reflection on the author at all. I’m sure they are still great fun to read. I simply can no longer enjoy the audible experience with this particular narrator and am very sorry to say that.

Deeply disappointed!
