There's a wealth of information out there for expectant moms on pregnancy and birth, but so often the dad is left out of the conversation. Male midwife Mark Harris seeks to redress the balance with this new book, drawing on his decades of experience with couples as they make the transition to being new parents. Covering topics from massage to sex and pain relief during labor to breastfeeding, this is a lively, honest, and frank discussion of pregnancy and birth from a man's point of view. Mark explores how to harness the power of birthing hormones, how to remain calm and aware in the birthing room, how to communicate effectively, and ultimately how to live the process of becoming a father.

Would you consider the audio edition of Men, Love, & Birth to be better than the print version?

I have not read the printed version but I will buy it as well as I think quite a lot of info in this book is so useful, it would help even more to read (as opposed to just listen).

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mark (the writer and narrator) is a very funny guy. Through his lovely character and huge amount of experience in the field, he manages to convey a vast amount of knowledge that will certainly help me and everyone else who reads this book. This is probably one of the best sources I've ever come across that caters for the needs of expectant fathers.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, absolutely.I laughed many times outloud and cried a few times too.
I've already got a child and my experience of being present when labour started was quite traumatic. Quite a lot of what Mark reveals in this book helped me make sense of what happened to me and my wife during labour and what followed. It explained why I felt the way I did and why I was not able to provide my wife with what she desperately needed once her waters broke. I was not prepared and did not have the right info that would allow me to be more calm, collected and productive for what can be a very stressful and scary processes.
In fact Mark makes it absolutely clear that labour and birthing does not have to be like that. It can be a magical experience for the couple if the man knows how to remain mentally and emotionally connected with his partner throughout.

Any additional comments?

I've read the book once and I've started reading it again. In fact, as I said above, I will buy a printed version as well as I'd like to make sure I follow the advice and exercises given at the end.

Loved this book. Read it as I teach antenatal classes. So informative and written in a really relaxed way.

I bought the book for the very serious reason of wanting to know more about how my partner is and will be feeling throughout the pregnancy, within the first pages I quickly found myself laughing. The author is knowledgeable but also hilarious at times, which makes a book so much easier to read.
I have also bought the audio track and find myself wanting to listen again, in every spare moment. I can envision the words being spoken as they are so clear and well described, the jargon is clarified and I feel smarter at the end of each chapter.
I'm now ready to better support my wife, so thank you Mark.
